
Interjections
are words or phrases used to exclaim or protest or command. They are short words which show strong feeling or
emotions. They sometimes stand by themselves, but they are often contained
within larger structures.
e.g. oh, ah, wow, hurrah, alas, ouch, Oops, aha, hey, etc
Interjections are short exclamations
which express strong or sudden feeling of
- Joy
- Sorrow
- Wonder
Exclamation sign is used after
interjections.
Examples.
o Hurrah! We won the competition.
o Ouch
! It hurts.
o Wow! What a nice shirt.
o Hey
! what are you
doing?
o Alas! My parents are dead.
o Oh!
I forgot to bring
my purse.
o Wow! I won the lottery!
o Oh, I don't know about that.
o I don't know what the heck you're
talking about.
o No, you shouldn't have done that.
Besides these specific interjections, a normal word can also
be used as interjection if it is used to express feeling or emotion.

What! I am selected for the
job?

Help! I am about to fall.

Well ! I will try my level
best.
Most mild interjections are treated as parenthetical elements and set off from
the rest of the sentence with a comma or set of commas. If the interjection is
more forceful, however, it is followed with an exclamation mark. Interjections are
rarely used in formal or academic writing.
