GERUND & (TO) INFINITIVE
 




GERUND
                GERUND adalah suatu bentuk “KATA KERJA + ING” yang berfungsi (digunakan)  sebagai kata benda (NOUN). Jadi dengan perkataan lain, Gerund adalah kata kerja yang dibendakan.  GERUND dapat berfungsi antara lain :
  1. Sebagai Subjek Kalimat
  2. Sebagai Objek Kalimat
  3. Sebagai Pelengkap (Complement) Kalimat
  4. Setelah Kata Depan (Preposition)
  5. Setelah Posessive Adjective
  6. Setelah Beberapa Kata Kerja Tertentu
  7. Sebagai Noun Modifier
  8. Untuk Menyatakan Suatu Larangan
  9. Untuk Menyatakan Ungkapan-ungkapan Khusus
  10. Digunakan dalam ‘Arti Passive’

·         He insists on staying home tonight
·         Will you consider helping me with my work ?
·         Rudi can’t help asking the question

Note : can’t help = can’t avoid = can’t stop

X.      DIGUNAKAN DALAM ARTI PASSIVE

Biasanya digunakan sesudah kata-kata kerja tertentu seperti : want, need, etc
                Contoh :
·         The radio needs repairing (The radio needs to be repaired)
·         The house wants painting (The house wants to be painted)
·         The products needs distributed (The products needs to be distributed)

                Ada beberapa Verbs yang dapat diikuti baik oleh Gerund maupun To Infinitive. Secara Struktur, keduanya sama benarnya, beberapa memiliki arti sama, beberapa memiliki arti berbeda.
Arti Sama :

Arti Berbeda :

·         I remembered to write my family (saya ingat untuk menulis pada keluarga)

TO INFINITIVE
I.        FUNCTION
The most common uses of the infinitive are:
To indicate the purpose or intention of an action (where the 'to' has the same meaning as 'in order to' or 'so as to'):
  • She's gone to collect her pay cheque.
  • The three bears went into the forest to find firewood.
a.      As the subject of the sentence:
  • To be or not to be, that is the question.
  • To know her is to love her.
    (Note: this is more common in written English than spoken)
With nouns or pronouns, to indicate what something can be used for, or what is to be done with it:
  • Would you like something to drink?
  • I haven't anything to wear.
  • The children need a garden to play in.

b.      After adjectives in these patterns:
  • It is + adjective +to-infinitive
    It is good to talk
  • It is + adjective + infinitive + for someone + to-infinitive.
    It is hard for elephants to see mice
  • It is + adjective + infintive + of someone + to-infinitive.
    It is unkind of her to say that.
c.      After an adjective + noun when a comment or judgment is being made:
  • It was a stupid place to park the car.
  • This is the right thing to do.
  • It was an astonishing way to behave.
With too and enough in these patterns:
too much/many (+ noun) + to-infinitive
  • There's too much sugar to put in this bowl.
  • I had too many books to carry.
too + adjective + to-infinitive
  • This soup is too hot to eat.
  • She was too tired to work.
too + adverb + to-infinitive
  • He arrived too late to see the actors.
enough (+ noun) + to-infinitive
  • I've had enough (food) to eat.
adjective + enough + to-infinitive
  • She's old enough to make up her own mind.

not enough (+noun) + to-infinitive
  • There isn't enough snow to ski on.
not + adjective + enough + to-infinitive
  • You're not old enough to have grand-children!
d.     to + infinitive or gerund:
ADVISE, ALLOW, PERMIT, FORBID, RECOMMEND, REQUIRE
  • In this group, the verbs have the same meaning followed by either the infinitive or the gerund. The difference is in the way of usage. If the person who is advised/allowed/forbidden/etc. is mentioned, a to + infinitive follows, if not, a gerund.
  • The instructor advised checking the "Advanced Settings" option.
    The instructor advised me to check the "Advanced Settings" option.
  • They don't allow smoking in this restaurant. (Smoking is not allowed in this restaurant.)
    They don't allow people to smoke in this restaurant. (People aren't allowed to smoke in this restaurant.)
  • They don't permit smoking in this restaurant. (Smoking is not permitted in this restaurant.)
    They don't permit people to smoke in this restaurant. (People aren't permitted to smoke in this restaurant.)
  • The authorities forbade entering the park because of a bush fire.
    The authorities forbade us to enter the park because of a bush fire.
  • The plumber recommended buying a new water heater.
    The plumber recommended me to buy a new water heater. (I was recommended to buy a new water heater.)
  • The project requires spending $70,000 in the initial phase.
    The project required us to work in groups.

Yuri was in his first year at university, studying History. He was rather a lazy student, and he tended to avoid (work) whenever he could. In the middle of the semester, his history professor gave out an assignment, due in two weeks. Yuri intended (do) the assignment, but he postponed (write) it for a week. The following week, he forgot (do) it. The night before the assignment was due, he suddenly remembered it, and rushed to the library.
